Wildlife Wake-up Calls
We woke up in El Cope’ Park again this am. It was great sleeping in the middle of nowhere. Not once did we hear a rooster crowing or a dog barking. That is not to say that it was “quiet”. We were awaken the first morning to the sound of something that initially sounded like an owl (although it started making noise in the morning). As we listened, other”owls”started to answer it. In the end we decided most likely we had been listening to monkey hoots, not owl hoots. As well, the first morning, we heard a parrot type of bird. We never actually saw the bird, just heard it’s chattering. Initially, it just made normal parrot squawking sounds. Then it started making a sound that was identical to water dripping. Finally it made a sound like water being sloshed around. Then it flew away.
This morning there were no monkeys or strange sounding parrots. Instead, some very, very loud buzzing bug was our alarm clock. We are not really sure what makes this noise, but we have heard it off an on since Mexico. We think it may be cicadas. They are SUPER loud. So loud, if they are nearby, they can almost drown out conversation. You can hear them from inside the van as you are driving down the highway at 80kph. Really, really, really loud!!!
We left the park this morning, and tonight are in El Valle, which is a weekend retreat for folks from Panama. It’s a cute little mountain town. It is well known for having a good artisan market on Sunday. So we visited the market this afternoon and picked up a few goodies. We figure we will stay in town a couple of nights, then head to Panama, to start organizing the shipping. Hopefully tomorrow we will hike to a waterfall. Can never see too many waterfalls, right?
