Today, We Are Tourists

Daniela

We played the good tourists today and visited some petroglyphs, a waterfall and a zoo.  Weren’t we busy little beavers?

First up was “la piedra pintada”, or the painted rock.  It was  a rather large petroglyph.  The carved lines of the design were painted in.  It made the picture easier to see, but obviously, much less authentic.  I am not sure if it was named the painted rock before someone decided to trace in the lines, or after.  PB020167 Further up the trail we found a non traced petroglyph.  Mungo decided to pose on it for us.PB020181

Next came the waterfall.  It had many tiers and was pretty awesome.  PB020179 PB020190

This time, for the first time, we had no guide, and no time limit on how long to stay at the waterfall.  This was wonderful.  It started raining really, really hard while we were there, otherwise I would have spent hours and hours there.  I really NEED my own waterfall.  Just a little one would be fine.  Someday.

Anyway, the last visit on the list was a local zoo.  I wasn’t sure what to expect of this place.  First of all, it was pouring rain…again, so most of the time we were ankle deep in water floating on the lawn.  It’s never cold when it rains, so it was bearable, if a little squishy.    The grounds were quite nice, the animals cages were too small, but the animals were all quite cute.  We got to see a real golden frog.PB020219 (sorry about the reflections off the glass).

We saw a very cute kinkajou.PB020245

But the loveliest of all, was the Baird’s Tapir.  What a wonderful creature!!  I knew that there were tapirs at this zoo and it was my main reason for going to the zoo.  I told the kids that they would like the tapir as well, because lately they have had a fascination with noses (snorgs).  They didn’t really believe me until they caught site of the great nosed creature.   Once they saw him, it was difficult to tear them away.  I think you can understand why.PB020328  Not only does he have a tremendous schnozz, but he knows how to use it.  He could lift it, wiggle it, stick it through the chain link fence.  He would lick it with his almost as impressive tongue. As an added bonus, he actually let us pet his funny nose through the chain link.  Now THAT was worth the price of admission!!!!
