Mission Accomplished

Daniela

Today we proceeded with our covert mission…code name…Mungo.  We left our camp spot with Mungo tucked in his kennel.  He was really confused as to why he was riding in his kennel instead of nestled in his bed of floof behind the back seat or watching the guanacos go by from his standing spot between the front seat.  He was a trooper though, he endured.  We got to the park gate, paid our entrance fee ( a steep $30/adult) and raced off to the trailhead where we planned to start walking.  The hike to the Torres is too long to do as a day hike.  It would take  almost 8 hours to hike to the Torres lookout, so we hiked instead to the “horns” lookout instead (los Cuernos).

It was cooler today, totally overcast, but luckily there was very little wind, so even though it was cool, it  was completely bearable.  The day started out quite clear, but the clouds moved in shortly after we got up.  Not before I had a chance to snap a few more pictures.

And likely word got around that I was looking for that perfect shot, because shortly after I got the camera out, this fellow decided to pose for me.

Helpful guy!

Anyway, on to the “horns”.  It was an easy walking trail and you initially visit a waterfall, called the Salto Grande.  Quite a nice fall.

In the background is the massif.  Soon, you come over a rise and see the horns.

They are composed of two types of stone, hence the different colors of stone.  The views just keep getting better and better from there.  You pass a few lakes that  act as mirrors.  This is Cerro Paine Grande.  Ah…heaven!

Here are the  horns, in all their glory

A wonderful day, enjoying the fall colors.

Definitely worth the price of admission and the lawbreaking!!  There are not a lot of day hikes that you can do in this park, so we have decided only to break the law once (in this park) and move on towards El Calafate tomorrow, back in Argentina.
