Paracas National Reserve

Daniela

This morning we left the city of Pisco, and headed south a few km to the Paracas National Reserve.  We could have explored the reserve as a package deal with the Ballestas yesterday, but we decided to drive here on our own and spend the night in the park.  The park encompasses both coastline and ocean, at a ratio of 35:65.  The coastline is pretty rugged and this is what attracts people to the park.  It certainly is not the rest of the scenery, which looks like this.

Very exciting, hey?  Sara described the park as a whole lot of nothing.  Of course, I said the coast is beautiful and here are the pictures to prove it.

We were hoping to see more wildlife, but we have only seen lizards and dead things washed up on the beach.  Oh, and this guy.

Not really sure what this cormorant was up to.  He spent hours walking up and down the beach.  He did not seem injured, walked ok, moved his wings ok, but he just walked along the beach and would let people approach him.

He actually walked right up to one fellow and gave him a little peck.  I laughed, but only because I saw it coming.  Last we saw of this crazy bird, he was headed off into the desert.  A little loopy in the head!

The wind is crazy up here, blows dust and sand everywhere.  At times, it feels like sandpaper is rubbing against your exposed skin.  This can’t be good for our paint job!  In any case, we are all alone out here tonight, settling in after watching a nice sunset.  Goodnight all!
