Penguins, and Pelicans and Sea Lions, Oh My!
This morning saw us up with the sun, ready to go visit the Ballestas Islands. We were driven from Pisco to Paracas, and at Paracas, we boarded a boat, the Penguino 1 to head out to the islands. Initially, the boat took us around a point where many pelicans were resting
Hundreds and hundreds of them just sitting around, enjoying the sun.
Also along this point, we were shown the “candelabra”. This is a Nazca Line-like formation. No one is really sure who is responsible for the formation and from when it dates (could be anywhere from 300 AD to the 17th century).
Also, they are not sure if it is a candelabra, or a 3 armed cactus. The formation is carved into the rock, and since there is only a small amount of sand sitting on rock, and this area gets a whopping 2mm of rain annually, the lines stay there.
Finally, it was onto the islands. So, so, so cool!!! We got to see penguins.
We got to see Peruvian boobies (unfortunately, no blue or red footed varieties).
The boobies were actually nesting, and although you will have a hard time picking out the ugly furry chicks in the photo, they were quite easy for us to see.
We also got to see cormorants and terns.
But best of all, we got to see many, many, many sealions!!!
It was a great tour, fully worth the $15!!!
Tomorrow, we move onto Ica and Huacachina, for a little dune buggying and sand boarding!! The adventure never ends!

Ooooo! I’m so jealous – I just love penguins! Looks like you guys had a hoot! It still saddens me that we never got to visit the Galapagos Islands…maybe in my next life.
