Lake Nicaragua
Although we were virtually on the shores of Lake Nicaragua in Granada, we never bothered to make it down to the lakeside. Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America and is home to the only species of freshwater shark. Today we traveled to San Jorge and boarded a ferry bound for Isla Ometepe. Isla Ometepe is a large island near the west side of the lake and is basically made up of two volcanoes, one active one dormant, joined by a narrow isthmus of land. Initially we thought we would have to stay in San Jorge overnight, because we thought the ferry only ran in the morning, but we were surprised to find that a ferry left San Jorge almost every hour. We were quickly snatched up by a tour guide, who arranged our ferry ride, our hotel on the island, and a tour guide to show us the sights on the island tomorrow. He actually was very well organized and I am glad that he helped us, because we didn’t really know what sights we should see on the island. We had to wait almost an hour to get on the ferry, so we wasted some time on the San Jorge side of the lake.
The wind was gusting and the waves were high. The kids immediately jumped into the water and started bouncing over the waves. Mungo and I hung out on the beach and watched the “beach dogs” playing. The wind was blowing Mungo’s ear all over the place. I present to you the flying ridgeback. Too cute.
We are staying on the west side of the island at a lagoon called Charco Verde. Nice hotel. The water is calmer on this side of the lake and in the evening, I got a few pictures of the sunset.
Tomorrow we explore the island, with an early start of 7:30. Wish me luck waking the boy up.
I love the picture with the kids running, I think that pays the whole trip.
I am happy you are having such a wonderful trip, thank you for sharing that with us
