Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Up

Daniela

Rainy, rainy day today.  We were in San Jose last night, actually just  a tiny bit north of it at a campsite.  It was a very North American type of trailer park, with the exception that the people let their dogs run free in the park.  Actually, to be fair, I think that only one  of the free range dogs belonged to a guest, the rest lived there, but they just about drove Mungo crazy.  Within 5 minutes of our arrival, there was a gang of 3 dogs around him, all sniffing, barking, humping, etc.  Poor dog.  They seemed to lose interest eventually, but Mungo was not forgetting his new friends quite so easily and was quite agitated.

This morning our plan was to head back to the beach, but as we approached our destination Sara protested, saying she was not in a beach type of mood and so we ended up changing destinations in mid-drive.  We are very near the Panamanian border tonight, in a town called San Vito.

Our drive to get to San Vito was very interesting.  We went up and up and up.  The highest  elevation that we reached was 3 350 m above sea level.  At this height, we were above the rain clouds, but then we started to descend.  First we hit fog, which really meant that we were driving through the clouds.PA200018   As we descended lower still, the rain started to fall, and it kept falling for the rest of the day.  So, it’s probably a good thing we didn’t hit the beach today.  Thanks Sara.  Our low elevation today was about 300 m above sea level, so we came down over 9 000 ft!!!  The town of San Vito is at about 900 m.  That is a lot of elevation change!  No wonder our ears were popping!

I am not sure what we will do tomorrow.  It depends on the weather, I guess.  There is a large peace park near here which is supposed to be very nice, but if it is raining, we may just high tail it out of this country and move on to Panama.
