Fun on the Flats
Yet another day in Salt Lake, but we are getting closer. We are back in the van tonight…Hurray! I know it might be hard for you to understand, but I 1000X prefer my van over a yucky hotel room. Home sweet home! We are still waiting on the trailer. Tomorrow?
Including this time, I think I have been to Salt Lake City three times, and I finally decided it was time to see THE lake. The south end of Great Salt Lake is about 16 miles west of the city. The skies were ominous, but since we’ve been here, the weather pattern has been on and off rain every few hours. The showers usually last about 15-20 minutes. So we kept our fingers crossed that the rain would hold off until we had finished exploring. The nice thing about the weather being bad is that we had the whole place to ourselves.
We stopped at the marina first and checked out some of the boats. Nice sailboats.
The lake was a little low, so there was exposed sand that we could walk on, and even better, that Mungo could RUN on. No one around, big open space, time to rip around free. No confinement in the van, no leash, just free.
For those people among you who do not have dogs, it is hard to explain how much joy you can derive from watching one leap and bound so happily. I hope these pictures can help explain this.
and without sticks.
He tried tasting the salty water. Sara tried tasting it too. Apparently, it tasted salty!!! Very salty! Oceans are about 3% salt, the lake is somewhere between 12 and 28% salt.
He also chased a lot of birds. American avocets nest and feed on the shores of this lake. We saw many today, although we read that at times there are up to 250, 000 of these birds around the lake. We did not see THAT many. All in all, he was a tired hound after all his fun. Best day yet in this town, but I am itching to leave.
