Perito Moreno Glacier
We visited the Perito Moreno Glacier today. This is a huge glacier, which flows down a valley into Lake Argentina. It is so large that it FILLS the valley, from side to side.
The leading edge of the glacier forms a 60 metre tall wall of ice. There are catwalks built in front of the glacier for people to view from.
You can also board a boat to take you close to the glacier from the lake side. We were considering doing this, but I am not sure they actually got any closer than we did on the boardwalks, so we decided to skip the ride. It is hard to get an appreciation for how large this thing is from pictures. The boat is in this picture on the right hand side. It might give you some perspective.
The glacier is still advancing, and all throughout the day, the ice groans and cracks. Pieces of ice break off periodically as well, and drop into the lake below. Sometimes HUGE pieces come crashing off. We were not lucky enough to see any huge pieces break off, I would say the largest we saw was about the size of you dining room table, but even a piece that big makes a huge noise.
The fall colors were very beautiful today and we were blessed with another warm day.
Here are some close up shots of the tips of the seracs.
Another winner in Argentina!
I love those fall colours!
Wow!
I second that.
