Tropical Rain
Sunday is a day of rest. At least it is for our host family. They do not cater to us on Sunday, so we were on our own for the whole day. We hung around the house in the morning, Kevin puttered with the van, the kids and I played a few games. We got Mungo out for a big romp around the yard. For any of you who are reading this, that have not seen my dog run, you really must some time. He is AMAZING!! He crouches way down to the ground and zips around at a hundred miles an hour. He plays this nasty game of chicken with us. He runs at you full speed and only veers away when he is inches away from you. If you stay still and don’t freak out, he USUALLY misses you. But if you “chicken out” and move, nine times out of ten he plows into you. That is a lot of dog going full speed to hit you!! Best to stay still.
We played a little bit with Tulita, who is the youngest daughter in the family. I have not asked her how old she is but I figure she is about 7 or 8. We taught her how to make balloon animals. Actually my intention was that we would make her one or two balloon animals and that would be it, but more than a dozen balloons later, we were still twisting together animals. I wonder what her Mom thought when she went into her room to find an entire ZOO of balloon animals laying on her bed!!
At lunch time we headed to one of the local restaurants/bars for a barbeque. The burgers looked so tasty that even vegetarian me had one!! There are many restaurants here that are owned or run by ex-patriots of the US or Canada. It is a strange thing to go to a restaurant and order in English. Actually, ordering in English is a relief, but it is feels a little obtrusive to have people speaking English all around you. Most of the foreign establishments have WiFi internet connections although it is questionable how well these connections work. We brought both our laptops with us, I wanted to post some blogs and Kevin wanted to do some banking. Kevin connected easily with the network, but my computer would not connect. After trying for almost and hour, I gave up and Sean and I went to the bar up the road to try their connection. We were much more successful there. Shortly after arriving at the Piscina, a bar and pool run by a former Canadian from Montreal (a Montreal Canadian), a BIG rain storm hit. It rained for nearly an hour, and again the rain just raced down the road, changing it into a temporary river. When the rain finally subsided we were able to return to Kevin and Sara at bar number one. It turns out their WiFi would only let one user on at a time. Good thing we didn’t keep trying to connect!!
Tomorrow we start Spanish school again. Kevin and I have our own teachers and will be taught one on one. The kids will share a teacher. My comprehension of Spanish is getting quite good (minus the word vegetarian), but there are days when I can’t string two words together. Other days, the words just flow. I hope we all enjoy our lessons. Let you know tomorrow.
